Vital Statistics Unit
The Vital Statistics Unit of Belize is a department under the Attorney General’s Ministry that maintains the records of births, deaths, marriages and other vital statistics within Belize. The main branch is located in Belize City with an additional seven (7) outpost branches located throughout the districts. The head of the Vital Statistics Unit is the Registrar who is currently the Solicitor General by virtue of a legislative designation under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act Chapter 157 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011.
The Vital Statistics Unit is guided by the law, specifically the Marriage Act Chapter 174 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011, Registration of Births and Deaths Act Chapter 157 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011 and the Families and Children Act Chapter 173 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011.
Responsibilities
- Registration of births ;
- Registration of Deaths;
- Marriage certificates;
- Birth certificates;
- Adoption certificates;
- Death certificates;
- Deed Polls (for change of name); and
- Correction of Entry to information in the Registry
In most cases, documents that have been applied for can be collected in two (2) weeks. We also offer ‘Same Day’ and ‘Next day’ services. The fee for each is dependent on the document requested and the speed of delivery.
At our outpost offices in the various districts the following services are offered:
- Birth Certificates;
- Death Certificates;
- Marriage Certificates;
- Adoption Certificates;
- Deed Polls;
- Registrar Certificates;
- Non-Marriage Certificates;
- Corrections; and
- Late Registration.
Application Forms
Applications for birth, death and/or marriage certificates are done in person at the Vital Statistics office. To apply, the applicant must present a valid form of identification (passport or a Belizean Social Security card).
